After clearing his physical, Denmark’s top goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, is on his way to meet his new Celtic colleagues in the United States. He will sign a one-year contract with the option for an additional season. The Denmark No. 1 passed a medical inspection in Italy yesterday and is set to sign a one-year contract with the option of an additional 12 months. Schmeichel, 37, will now travel to Washington to rejoin with Brendan Rodgers, whom he previously worked with at Leicester City. The free agent could possibly be officially introduced as Joe Hart’s replacement at the Parkhead club today.
Schmeichel will be joined by fellow new goalie Viljami Sinisalo, who signed a £1 million deal from Aston Villa on Tuesday. Sinisalo, 22, will serve as an understudy and tutored by the hugely experienced Schmeichel, with the objective of becoming Celtic’s future first-choice goalkeeper. The Scottish champions are also hoping to complete a permanent agreement with Benfica to capture midfielder Paulo Bernardo. The former Portugal Under-21 captain impressed on loan last season, and Rodgers is eager to bring him on board as part of the club’s pre-season US tour.
However, Celtic were struck a blow last night when Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup stated that Adam Idah is a “important” component of his plans for the season. Idah, 23, made his season debut when the Canaries were defeated 3-0 in Belgium by Club Brugge. The Republic of Ireland international started but was replaced after only 33 minutes as part of a pre-planned early change.
