Adam Gotsis, an Australian NFL player, was recently arrested for allegedly raping a woman in 2013, his team, the Denver Broncos, said.
Gotsis, 25, of Melbourne, handed himself in to Atlanta police last Wednesday and could face a charge of strong-arm rape, according to a police report. He was released after paying a $50,000 bond.
The woman, now 30, filed a police report on February 1 of this year.
“We were recently informed of an investigation into an alleged incident involving Adam Gotsis that occurred in 2013 when he was in college,” according to a statement released by the Broncos. “Our organization was made aware of his arrest on March 7, and it is our understanding that no decision has been made as to whether or not charges will be filed.
“The Broncos take such accusations very seriously and will actively monitor the legal proceedings. This issue was swiftly reported to the NFL as soon as we became aware of it, and we will continue to communicate with the league office about it.”
Gotsis grew up playing Australian rules football in Melbourne until he was about 13 years old, when he started playing American football for the Monash Warriors.
He attended Georgia Tech for four years before being taken in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Broncos, who were then Super Bowl champions. He recorded 41 tackles last season and started 13 of the club’s 16 games.
