Everton’s punishment for violating English Premier League (EPL) financial rules has been lowered from ten to six points. In November 2023, the team received a 10-point deduction for violating the league’s profitability and sustainability standards (PSRs). An independent panel determined that Everton had made a loss by spending about £20 million more than the EPL’s threshold, and the punishment was imposed after five days of discussion.

The club also confessed to the commission that “it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22, but the extent of the breach remained in dispute”. The suspension took effect immediately, plunging Everton into the relegation race. Despite admission, the club contested the decision. EPL announced the reduction in action on Monday via its website, citing an Appeal Board comprised of Sir Gary Hickinbottom (Chair), Daniel Alexander KC, and Katherine Apps KC.

“Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the Appeal Board, which has substituted the original points deduction of 10 for six,” according to the press release. “This revised sanction has immediate effect, and the Premier League table will be updated today to reflect this.” The penalty reduction moves Everton from 17th to 15th place.
