Ben Godfrey departs Everton to join Europa League champions Atalanta, embarking on the “next challenge” of his career. What happened? Godfrey has left Merseyside for Bergamo in a deal valued roughly £10 million ($12.7 million), which is less than half of Everton’s fee for him in 2020. On X, the versatile defender stated that Atalanta is “my new home”.
THE BIGGER PICTURE In addition to looking forward to the new chapter, Godfrey took a moment to reflect on his time with Everton and express gratitude. He played four seasons with the club, making 93 appearances in all competitions. It would have been more if not for injury, as a fractured leg during the 2022-23 season forced him to miss time and made it difficult for him to reclaim his place even after returning.
What Godfrey said Godfrey wrote on X: “I joined the club in 2020, and everyone there…fans, staff, and players made me feel welcome. I’ve formed wonderful memories at this football club and will always cherish my time here. Now it’s time to move on to my next adventure. Thank you for all of your support. “Best wishes, Everton.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR EVERTON? Everton’s commitment to keep fellow centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite will be put to the test in the coming weeks after they successfully sold Godfrey to raise funds for a marginal player entering the final year of his contract. The 21-year-old is definitely on Manchester United’s transfer radar, but their initial bid of £35 million ($44 million) was rejected. An increased bid is on the way, but Everton is holding out for £70 million ($88 million), albeit the Red Devils have also stated that they are willing to walk away due to budgetary constraints.
