Report: Anthony Patterson’s future at Sunderland is now clearer.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has been linked to Liverpool and Manchester City this summer. Anthony Patterson, 24, graduated from the Sunderland youth academy and has already made 123 appearances for the Black Cats, keeping 37 clean sheets. Patterson made 45 Championship appearances and maintained 13 clean sheets last season, although the Black Cats finished 16th in the table. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne-born goalkeeper was a target for Premier League sides during the season, with Liverpool being the most touted. Liverpool, Manchester City, and newly promoted Southampton have all been linked since the season’s finale.

Alan Nixon recently reported that Sunderland value Patterson at £20million, with the Black Cats also entertaining interest in Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke this summer. Now, some more clarification has been offered about Patterson’s future at Sunderland. Sunderland’s stance on Anthony Patterson, amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester City An emerging report from the Sunderland Echo has shed light on Patterson’s Sunderland future amid Premier League interest. According to the Sunderland Echo, Patterson is in ‘no rush’ to quit the club, and new manager Regis Le Bris and Sunderland are ‘obviously intending’ for Patterson to be the club’s first choice goalkeeper next season. Patterson’s contract at the Stadium of Light runs until 2028, so the Black Cats are under no hurry to trade their star goalie.

Liverpool and Manchester City are both searching for young No.2 goalkeepers to join their teams this summer and eventually challenge their current No.1 goalkeepers for the starting place. Southampton, meanwhile, may be able to provide Patterson regular Premier League action next season, since their number one position appears to be up for grabs as things stand.

Kristjaan Speakman deserves Sunderland’s recognition for one thing. Sunderland not only has a growing roster of Premier League-bound young players, but their transfer fees are also increasing. But they are mostly on long-term contracts. The Black Cats are not under imminent pressure to sell anyone this summer, so Kristjaan Speakman and his team may sit back and wait for bids that fit their valuation.

Not only that, but young players like Patterson know they’ll get game time at Sunderland, which isn’t always assured in the Premier League. Sunderland, on the other hand, appear to be planning to sell at least one of their key players this summer in order to provide Le Bris and Speakman with some transfer funds. Sunderland sorely needs to add more attacking talent and experience if they are to improve on last season’s disappointing league result.
