European club table £6.7 million bid to sign Everton star

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Serie A club Atalanta has made a £6.7 million approach for Everton defender Ben Godfrey. The reputable journalist writes on his website (26 June) that the Europa Conference League winners have tabled a bid for the former England international and are eager to add him to their roster. David Ornstein claimed on Wednesday (26 June) that the Toffees had received a bid of €10 million (£8.4 million), but Di Marzio feels the sale was worth less, while negotiations are still underway. Everton has Ben Godfrey transfer choice to make. The transfer window at Goodison Park will be extremely active, with both incomings and outgoings expected throughout, and some major decisions will need to be made.

The club has previously rejected Manchester United’s £43 million proposal for Jarrad Branthwaite while holding out for £70 million, while Amadou Onana and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are all expected to receive offers at some stage. However, while they are crucial players, Godfrey’s contract predicament and the reality that he is mostly a backup player on the squad need a decision on his future.

Godfrey has declined a new contract, and with proposals for the versatile defender pouring in, the club must decide whether to sell or risk losing him for free in 2025. They have valued him at £15 million, and while it is on the high side, £6.7 million is simply too cheap, and the club is correct to demand more money before agreeing to sell.
