Alan Myers announces Calvert-Lewin contract ruling following Everton…

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is unlikely to sign a new Everton deal, according to Alan Myers, despite a prospective move to Newcastle falling through. The Sky Sports journalist reacted to a Twitter inquiry on June 24 after reporting that a deal with the Magpies had been called off, hinting that he does not anticipate the striker to extend his contract at Goodison Park.

Calvert-Lewin has a year left on his Toffies deal and is garnering interest from several Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Brentford. [Football transfers, 21 June]. Myers responded to the possibility that the 27-year-old would sign a new contract now that he does not look to be moving to St. James’ Park: “I don’t see that, but let’s see”. On May 30, BBC Sport reported that the club was in talks with the Englishman about a contract extension.

Everton sign Iliman Ndiaye amid Dominic Calvert-Lewin uncertainty. There appears to be a reasonable expectation at Goodison that their number nine won’t be around at the start of next season because they are now thought to be on the verge of agreeing a deal for Marseille attacker Iliman Ndiaye [Foot Mercato, 24 June] and have been strongly linked with Chelsea’s Armando Broja.

That implies not only that there will be room for a new forward in Sean Dyche’s team, but also that money may be coming in to fund such a move. Exits for players such as Amadou Onana or Ben Godfrey might create a budget, although activity would likely be focused on signings in other positions if Beto and Youssef Chermiti remain at Everton.

After two seasons of injury hell, it would be disappointing to see Calvert-Lewin go on the heels of a strong bounce season in which he scored eight goals in 38 games. Although Dan Friedkin’s projected takeover signals that the club’s financial status may soon improve, they definitely don’t have the luxury of losing a player for free next year when they might realistically collect a reasonable pay for him now. And if he wants to move on, that may be his only option as long as a suitor is ready to pay a reasonable price.
