Manchester United is apparently considering a second proposal for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, but the club remains steadfast on their £70 million ($89 million) valuation. What happened? The Red Devils have selected the English centre-back as a key target to strengthen their defence and have made an initial £43 million bid for his services, including add-ons. However, the Toffees quickly rejected the proposal because they feel their prized asset will enable them obtain a greater transfer fee.

THE BIGGER PICTURE According to the Daily Mail, United are unwilling to stop up on their chase and are preparing an enhanced proposal as Everton maintains their £70 million ($89 million) value of Branthwaite. The Merseyside club reportedly believes that a cost closer to the £80 million paid by Manchester United for Harry Maguire is a fair indication of Branthwaite’s worth and is using it as a benchmark while negotiating.

Did you know? Branthwaite was named the club’s Young Player of the Season after a standout season at Goodison Park. They place a high value on the player and are fully aware of the potential financial gain from his sale. They have struggled to meet the Premier League’s PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules), and a move might give much-needed relief. Despite this, Everton are not in a hurry to sell and are sticking to their £70 million asking price, trusting that either United or another club will fulfill their expectations.

WHAT IS NEXT? Securing great defensive talents like Branthwaite aligns with Ten Hag’s aim of building a strong and resilient group capable of contending at the highest levels. After Raphael Varane’s departure, the United backline requires reinforcement, and Branthwaite’s youth, combined with his Premier League experience, make him a perfect choice for Ten Hag’s long-term goals.
