Keith Wyness, former Everton manager, has suggested that Leicester City will be deducted at least “six points” in the 2024-25 season. Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, suggested that if the Foxes are relegated from the Premier League next season, they could face even more punishment.
Leicester were charged with violating the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in March, months before being promoted from the Championship to champions. According to the Daily Mail (6 June), their argument might continue on past the start of the 2024-25 campaign. It is stated that the delay is due to Leicester’s “urgent legal proceedings” against the Premier League and the EFL following the allegation. Wyness thinks Leicester is ‘not in a terrific spot’ with a’six-point deduction’ on the way.
The Midlands club, which posted losses of £89.7 million for the 2022-23 season, is without a manager following Enzo Maresca’s departure for Chelsea. Wyness stated on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “It’s a very complex case for Leicester because it covers two leagues. “Additionally, Leicester’s own attack – suing both the Premier League and the EFL – has made matters much more complicated.
“They’re certainly not going to benefit from a two-point reduction for co-operation.”All of the cases, I suppose, will result in a points deduction. It might be six or more. “There won’t be any allowances for good behaviour.”It’s a multi-layered case and a complete mess. Leicester, meanwhile, will gain from contesting this issue while still in the Premier League.
“But they best start playing right away, because they’ll face at least a six-point deduction – and if they lose, they may suffer considerably more punishment in the EFL. “It’s not a good place for them; they’re still having problems with PSR. “Building a successful squad will be difficult for them.”
