The Milwaukee Bucks have announced the suspension of Thanasis Antetokounmpo.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks (Eventually) More than any previous year since the tradition began, the Bucks’ re-signing of Thanasis Antetokounmpo appears to be in risk. It’s not because he’s not good enough to make the squad or because he offended someone; it’s largely because he’s not healthy right now and will be for the foreseeable future.

Shortly after Milwaukee’s season ended, Thanasis was diagnosed with a torn Achilles, one of the most severe injuries in sports. The timeline for these injuries can be hazy, although they usually take close to a year. Still, according to Harris Stavrou of SPORT24, Antetokounmpo plans to return to action in six months. Given that he will be unable to play for the next six months, if not longer, the Bucks may choose not to sign Thanasis and free up a roster space, instead allowing him to rehab back to full health.

However, if he is cleared to return to basketball activity, they could pick him up. For the time being, it makes sense to maintain roster flexibility. The only potential stumbling block in that line of reasoning is if a team would be willing to take him up despite his injuries. Last offseason, the New York Knicks appeared to be a real bidder for Thanasis, with the goal of luring Giannis Antetokounmpo. Giannis signed an extension last offseason, so it’s doubtful that a team will do so now, but it’s not impossible.
