Sunderland’s first-team coach leaves to take a post at League Two club. Sunderland AFC news: A first-team coach has left the club to join League Two side Gillingham. Anthony Hayes has left Sunderland’s first-team coaching position to become assistant manager of League Two club Gillingham. Hayes joined Sunderland on a short-term deal in February, having previously worked as an assistant manager at Charlton. He will assist interim manager Mike Dodds on Wearside.
After a brief stint in the North East, Hayes will join Mark Bonner’s coaching staff at Gillingham, following the latter’s appointment at the Priestfield Stadium last month. Hayes, who joined Gillingham as assistant manager, told the club’s website, “I am very excited and delighted to be here. I look forward to the task. We now have to focus on the everyday tasks that would offer the players the best opportunity of winning football matches.”
Sunderland’s official account stated on X: “We can today confirm the departure of Anthony Hayes, who has joined Gillingham as assistant manager after his contract on Wearside expired. “Best wishes for the future, Anthony!”
