Cam Smith is very devastated after…
The rookie seasons of the Miami Dolphins’ first two draft selections in 2023 were extremely unlike.
De’Von Achane, a third-round running back, proved he was one of the NFL’s top playmakers by racking up 518 total yards and seven touchdowns in a thrilling three-game span from Week 3 to Week 5. Despite being limited by a knee issue, he managed to complete nine complete games with 897 yards and 11 touchdowns.
However, despite appearing to have a great preseason and training camp, second-round pick Cam Smith only saw 20 defensive snaps in his rookie year and was mostly used on special teams.
Smith found it difficult to establish himself in a rotation of cornerbacks that also included Eli Apple, Kader Kohou, Xavien Howard, and Jalen Ramsey. Vic Fangio, the former defensive coordinator, was explicit about the rookie’s offseason requirements.
The previous season, Fangio advised, “Just improve in all areas.” “Assignment, technique, execution, know-how — just a little bit in all areas.”
Smith stated he’s prepared to contribute in Year 2 with a renewed outlook and a new defensive coordinator in Anthony Weaver.
“The season I desired wasn’t mine. I mean, that’s it. I didn’t really get the opportunity that I wanted,” Smith remarked. “There’s nothing provided to you in this league at the end. I feel free because things happen to me and I’m here.”
As a rookie, Smith had few options due to players who had experience before him as well as the possible consequences of playing him before he was ready.
According to Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, a player’s growth is not best served by a trial-by-fire approach at cornerback.
