The Green Bay Packers face significantly fewer issues and doubts now than they did a year ago. Following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets, many fans and NFL analysts questioned if Jordan Love was talented enough to justify the risk of moving a future Hall of Famer. And for the first half of the season, it appeared he would not be.
However, Love guided the Packers to a 7-3 record in the final ten games of the 2023 NFL season, securing a wild card berth in the playoffs. He then led them to a stunning away victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Despite losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, the Packers knew by the end of the season that Love was their quarterback of the future. He concluded the 2023 regular season with a 64.2% completion rate, 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 96.1.
One of the only questions the Packers have heading into the season is how much to pay him for his upcoming contract deal. NFL analysts are debating how much the Green Bay Packers will pay Jordan Love. Prior to the 2023 NFL season, Love and the Packers reached an agreement to buy out his fifth-year extension season. He is expected to earn around $11 million this year, which is far less than the market value for a quarterback of his caliber.
Former NFL agent Joel Corry recently authored an article for CBS Sports in which he claimed that Love’s contract deal would pay him $46-48 million per year. He calculated this sum by comparing what the Packers did when Rodgers signed his first contract extension in 2008 to what they paid the future Hall of Famer on his final contract in 2022.
Since the publication of that article, the Detroit Lions have given Jared Goff a four-year contract extension worth $53 million per season. Many people are asking if other quarterbacks up for extensions, such as Love, will receive $50 million or more. According to an NFL insider, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love may earn Joe Burrow-level money.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport stated a few days ago that the Packers and Love will agree to a contract extension regardless of when or if they do so. In other words, a deal will be completed. Only two questions remain: when and how much? Mike Garafolo of NFL Network feels the deal will be in Joe Burrow area.
“He is going to be in Joe Burrow territory. There is no dispute about that. I keep hearing that. Another thing to remember is that you might think, “Oh, Joe Burrow has a better resume.” “Who cares?” Like, this is the moment to strike Jordan Love. He’s going to work hard to close the transaction with what he’s got. He wasn’t the starter for the first few years, so he says, ‘This is all I have to show you, and it was pretty amazing.’ You saw the number there: second in the league for passing touchdowns. So he’s going to press for that figure.
“And on the Packers’ end of things. Brian Gutekunst received some criticism when he was drafted. Aaron Rodgers suffered as a result of the transaction. And Jordan Love sort of proved them correct. So he has an incentive to lock this man up and prove that he is the franchise quarterback. Burrow, by the way, earns $55 million a season and is the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. If Love’s new contract falls inside Burrow area, it may be a record-breaking deal. He will undoubtedly become the highest-paid player in team history.
