Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins’ contract extension comes to an abrupt halt because…

If there is one area of the Miami Dolphins offseason that has supporters guessing about what will happen, it is the circumstances surrounding star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s contract extension. The two sides are currently negotiating to reach an agreement that will suit the Dolphins’ goals and place Tagovailoa among the top paid signal-callers in the NFL.

People are curious about when a deal may be done to be ready for the upcoming season, though, as the University of Alabama product missed a majority of the team’s organized team activities (OTAs) and offseason program. “There doesn’t appear to be an immediate deal in sight,” reports ESPN Dolphins writer Marcel Louis-Jacques.

Louis-Jacques stated, “The Dolphins have begun negotiations with Tagovailoa, though it doesn’t seem like a deal is imminent.” It’s rare for Tagovailoa to have missed so much of the team’s offseason training in the last month. Both parties are eager to reach an agreement, which most likely means that the No. 5 pick in 2020 would rank among the NFL’s highest-paid players.

“Miami doesn’t necessarily need to extend him this offseason, as Tagovailoa still has the final year of his rookie deal in 2024,” Louis-Jacques continued. “The Dolphins also could apply the franchise tag in future years.”
