Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, has said that Chelsea’s decision to fire manager Mauricio Pochettino is a “very dangerous” move.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now heads a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, stated no one would have predicted the Blues to finish sixth even “five or six weeks” ago.
Chelsea revealed on Tuesday (May 21) that Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent, only days after the end of the 2023-24 season.
According to reports, the Argentine disagreed with the club’s plan and was denied access to key decision-making positions.
The London team finished sixth this season and will play in the Europa League next season, after to a remarkable comeback in the second half of the season.
Chelsea’should’ve supported Pochettino, claims ex-Everton CEO Wyness.
Chelsea originally struggled for form under Pochettino, but only Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City have scored more points in 2024.
Wyness stated on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “It’s been extremely interesting.
“I personally think Pochettino finished strong, and it showed what a bit of stability could do.”I believe he needs more experience in his squad.
“To finish where they did, no one would have predicted it even five or six weeks ago.
“Stability is crucial, and I thought another season under Pochettino would have paid off for them.
“But they’ve altered again, which may be quite dangerous.
“They should have supported Pochettino and sought to have a calm time, allowing him to bring in a few of experienced players.
“They’re going to have a really rigorous Thursday-Sunday schedule next season, and you need expertise in that circumstance.
“I believe it’s a mistake – but I’m not signing the cheques.”
In other reports, Chelsea is in negotiations about recruiting an Englishman as new manager.
