George Russell says Mercedes is coming closer to the current leaders of Formula 1, Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. Russell thinks the Silver Arrows need to adjust fast to the shifting conditions at Monaco if they want to compete at the top of the pack.

Mercedes finished second in the 2023 constructors’ championship, although they have yet to finish on the podium after seven races of the season—just the second time that has occurred since they returned to Formula One in 2010—following yet another reset.

Mercedes’ second-highest scoring grand prix of the season at Imola, with 15 points, demonstrated how far the team has fallen from its former glory. However, Russell thinks the W15 is improving after a period of aggressive upgrades.

“The vehicle is undoubtedly more balanced throughout the course now,” Russell stated to a small group of media representatives, including Total-Motorsport.com. “I believe that we have advanced when you consider the distance between us and Red Bull as well as the remaining midfield players.

However, I believe it’s accurate to state that McLaren and Ferrari have advanced at a similar rate, therefore we must continue to work on improving the vehicle. And right now, the entire team is working nonstop to deliver those upgrades as soon as feasible

Even in their glory years, Monaco was a relatively unhappy hunting ground for Mercedes with ‘only’ four wins and a single 1-2 in the turbo hybrid era, with the unique nature of the track often mixing up the running order.
