The LSU Tigers have finally added their first incoming transfer, almost a month after the NCAA’s Spring Transfer Portal window started. Jay’Viar Suggs, a defensive tackle from Grand Valley State, has pledged to Brian Kelly and the LSU football team, adding much-needed depth to the defensive tackle group. Suggs, who still has two years left of eligibility, joins the LSU football team.
Suggs demonstrated a strong pass rush ability with three sacks in 2022 and 21 tackles, five sacks, and four pass breakups for Grand Valley State in 2023. Suggs was probably signed because of Brian Kelly’s Grand Valley State connections, as Kelly coached the Lakers from 1991 to 2003. Kenzel Kelly, Kelly’s son, was a teammate of Suggs at Grand Valley State.
The Tigers won this battle late, offering a scholarship after Suggs named a final six of USC, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida State, and Kentucky. Landing Suggs was massive as the team swung and missed on several defensive tackle targets as Brian Kelly said the team wasn’t in the market of “buying players”.
Suggs will now slot in alongside Jacobian Guillory as the two starting defensive tackles for the defense. The Tigers may not be done shopping either as the team hosted Stephen F Austin transfer defensive tackle Brandon Lane on an unofficial visit on Mother’s Day. The Tigers are also in play for former Tennesse players Wesley Walker and Tyler Baron.
