Leicester City’s greatest Premier League fear—and its real cause

The three freshly promoted teams in the Premier League have all returned to their previous positions after a one-season stint in the spotlight.

Actually, they’ve also given up with a whine. The best of the lot, Luton, finished with just 26 points, the lowest total in Premier League history for a team finishing in eighteenth place. With the fewest points of any remaining team, Nottingham Forest made it through with 32.

As Leicester City gets ready to return to the Premier League, it appears to be a bad omen. The Championship and the top flight are financially apart, and this season has shown that this gap is getting harder to close

On BBC’s Final Score over the weekend, former Brighton striker Glenn Murray stated, “The gap is getting bigger and bigger.” “I believe that all three promoted clubs’ teams being relegated will happen more frequently because the Premier League is such a dominant league.”

Murray did, however, add: “I think Leicester might perhaps break the trend the following year. They clearly still have a very potent team after the Championship.

Sure, but just barely. Eight out of the fifteen promoted clubs have not lasted more than a year in the Premier League, and more than half of them have fallen back to the bottom over the last five seasons.

When looking at a rolling five-year average, this is the highest number in fifteen years. Therefore, it’s not as hard to remain up now as it would have been in 2010 when they were playing for the Premier League. It’s too soon to determine if a promoted club has never faced greater challenges.
