The Green Bay Packers believe they’ve found their next franchise quarterback. For the third year in a row, the Packers may have a long-term solution at the most important position in football.
In his first year as a full-time starter in 2023, Love had a 96.1 passing rating, 64.2% completion percentage, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Despite a slow start to the season, Love concluded as one of the league’s top quarterbacks. During the last eight games of the regular season, Love completed 70.3% of his throws for 2,150 yards. During that time, he threw 18 touchdowns and one interception. During that time, he also earned the league’s second-highest quarterback rating at 112.7.
He also had a great game against the Cowboys in the playoffs. During the game, 16 of 21 throws were completed, totaling 272 yards and three touchdowns. He had a flawless quarterback rating until he failed to finish his final pass.
Love surely accomplished enough to earn himself a new deal, but may it differ from what we’ve been expecting?
Could the Green Bay Packers change their QB Jordan Love extension?
According to the NFL Scouting Report on Bleacher Report:
The Green Bay Packers have the NFL’s youngest roster in 2023, and they don’t have too many expensive contracts. They have plenty of cap space to handle the upcoming season, with an estimated $62.4 million in 2025 cap space.
However, the decision to extend quarterback Jordan Love looms enormous. He appeared to be the long-term answer at the close of last season, and unless fortune changes, he’ll get a big deal this or next offseason.
“At a minimum, Love should be in the $48.5 million-to-$49 million-per-year neighborhood,” former NFL agent Joel Corry said for CBS Sports.
Jared Goff’s $53 million-per-year agreement may have already raised Love’s price tag above Corry’s estimate. The figure will only rise if quarterbacks such as Dak Prescott and Tua Tagovailoa sign new contracts before Green Bay and Love enter negotiations.
On May 3rd, Jordan Love became eligible to sign an extension with the Packers. It’s fair to question how his contract will be structured considering how he finished 2023 as a top-10 quarterback in the league.
As a passer, Love ranked among the top ten in terms of passing yards, touchdowns, PFF passing grade, and big throws. Additionally, Love led the youngest NFL team to the playoffs since the 1970s.
While the Packers may sign a quarterback like Prescott, Justin Fields, or Trey Lance in 2025 free agency, utilizing the franchise tag on Love is likely their best option for extending him.
Will the Packers ever franchise Tag Love?
On May 3rd, Jordan Love became eligible to sign a contract extension with the Packers. It’s reasonable to question how his contract will be structured, given that he finished 2023 as a top-10 quarterback in the league.
Love placed in the top 10 for throwing yards, touchdowns, PFF passing grade, and major throws. Furthermore, Love guided the youngest NFL team into the playoffs since the 1970s.
