Mads Hermansen is back working with Brondby to keep himself fit before this summer’s Euros and is delighted that City’s promotion earns extra money for the Danish club.
Mads Hermansen welcomed Leicester City’s promotion with the added benefit of earning more money for his former club, Brondby.
Hermansen returned to his first senior club last week and will exercise among his former teammates to maintain his health ahead of the European Championships this summer. The goalkeeper is expected to be included as one of Kasper Schmeichel’s assistants in the Denmark squad.
He returned not only as a Championship winner, but also with an additional £500,000 in transfer fees for Brondby, according to Danish media. This brings the total transfer fee paid by City to £6.5 million.
“Everything I can give back to Brondby in one way or another, I am happy about,” Hermansen stated. “They are the ones who developed me as a player and provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate my abilities. I owe Brondby a lot of money, and whatever they get back, I’ll be delighted.”
With two Danish Superliga matches remaining, Brondby is in title contention. Despite the pressure of the title chase, their manager, Jesper Sorensen, took the opportunity to laud Hermansen’s performance at City.
He has replaced Schmeichel as City’s unquestioned number one. And he could do the same for Denmark, with City’s former captain now 37 and 14 years older than Hermansen.
Sorensen stated: “Mads has had a terrific year. He has not taken modest advances, but rather large steps. They can be difficult to accept, yet he demonstrates the attributes.
“There were high expectations for Leicester after they were relegated and had to return. Pressure has been applied. And goalkeeping might be difficult, but Mads has done an excellent job.
“There are goalkeepers on the Danish national team whose contracts are about to expire. I can easily picture Mads taking over and filling the role.
“What you can say about Mads is that he has performed in an unusual situation and made some significant steps. He seemed to be poised to take some fresh, huge leaps. Because they will arrive when he needs to be pushed in the Premier League next season.”
