Doc Rivers has Hired Ex-Buck, 3-Time Champ to Coaching Staff: Report

Doc Rivers and the Milwaukee Bucks appear to be looking for some help on the bench. For Rivers, obtaining the appropriate support entails considering bringing in a familiar face. According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, the recognizable face in question is Sam Cassell.

In a May 15 story, Stein said that Rivers wanted to hire the Bucks alum as an assistant coach.

“If the former three-time NBA ring-winner does not receive the Lakers’ job, Rivers wants to make a hard effort to get Cassell on his staff in Milwaukee, according to league sources. Cassell is in his debut season in Boston as part of Joe Mazzulla’s staff, but he has coached under Rivers in nine of his 15 seasons on NBA benches.”

Cassell has collaborated with Rivers as a player and an assistant. He played for the Boston Celtics’ 2008 championship team, which was coached by Rivers. Since becoming an assistant coach, Cassell has been a member of Rivers’ coaching staff for many seasons.

From 2014 until 2020, he served as Rivers’ assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers. When Rivers accepted his next job with the Philadelphia 76ers, Cassell followed and stayed until 2023

Cassell competed in the NBA from 1993 to 2009. In his first two seasons, he won two championships with the Houston Rockets. Before joining the Bucks in 1999, he worked as a journeyman. Cassell led the Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals for the last time before Giannis Antetokounmpo arrived.
