FFP woes for Everton? Branthwaite might boost summer sales.
Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they look to make a bid for the 21-year-old during the forthcoming summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.
A move for the England international would be consistent with White Hart Lane’s freshly revised transfer policy. Daniel Levy & Co. are looking to bring in high-potential young players who can be shaped to meet Ange Postecoglou’s long-term needs. Spurs are seeking at Premier League-proven possibilities to help solidify their team for next season’s Champions League push.
Following the challenges Spurs experienced due to a lack of depth in the position, there is a need to add players in the centre of defence. The Lilywhites had to use full-backs in the middle of defence at some time this season, and Ange Postecoglou does not want to replicate that situation the following season. The club did sign Radu Dragusin during the winter window, but they are likely to make at least one additional acquisition for the position this summer.
Home-grown hope or monetary injection? Everton face the Branthwaite dilemma.
While the North Londoners appear eager to obtain Branthwaite’s services, Everton’s goal is to spark a bidding war for the midfielder. Along with Spurs, Manchester United and City are interested in signing the 21-year-old.
Due to FFP compliance, the Merseyside Blues may be forced to sell their most expensive asset this summer. The club may be obliged to sell either Branthwaite or Onana during the summer transfer window, with a £50 million bid apparently enough to entice Everton to move him.
He is one of the strongest defenders outside the top six, and a strong performance for England at the Euro Championships will help raise his profile.
However, it remains to be seen whether the rumour of Branthwaite’s relocation this summer is true.
