According to TMZ Sports, the Green Bay Police Department has launched an internal investigation into an altercation between an officer and Packers running back A.J. Dillon during Saturday’s soccer match at Lambeau Field.
During a rain delay, an officer grabbed and then pushed Dillon, who was on the field attempting to excite the fans with a Lambeau Leap.
A department official told TMZ, “The Green Bay Police Department appreciates Mr. Dillon’s perspective and supporting sentiments. The Green Bay Police Department’s Professional Standards/Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigation into this event.”
The department’s chief, Chris Davis, later tweeted on Monday:
Dillon explained the unusual episode, which was captured on camera by many event attendees, in a series of tweets. The Packers’ running back described the altercation with the officer as a “miscommunication.”
Packers president Mark Murphy described the situation as “unfortunate” on Monday.
The match between Manchester City and Bayern Munich on Saturday was Lambeau Field’s first soccer event in history. Man City won the shortened game 1-0. Two weather delays delayed the proceedings.
Dillon, a third-year running back at Boston College, has quickly become a fan favorite in Green Bay. He led the Packers in rushing last year.
