Just In: Jared Goff Outlines a Kicker for the Detroit Lions to Sign

Following Goff’s lead to the NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl, the Lions signed the veteran quarterback to a long-term agreement at $53 million per year, or $212 million, becoming him the league’s eighth-highest-paid quarterback.
Goff’s contract might have an impact on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys, serving as the platform for a potential long-term contract extension.

Lions Star QB Jared Goff On New Extension: It Was More About Security Than Money

In the meanwhile, the Lions expect their significant investment in Goff to pay off in the coming years, with one of the league’s most exciting and talented young rosters surrounding him.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff has commented about his $212 million four-year contract extension, claiming it was for stability so he could perform on the field.

Goff was important in leading the Lions to their first conference championship in decades.

They dominated the NFC North, going 12-5.

“It was largely about security. I believe you may argue about the figures and so on, but that was never something I was very concerned about,” Goff told reporters. “It was the security and the no-trade provision, knowing that everything was in there. Feeling confident, and then knowing that I can leave that behind me and look forward to what’s next.”

Sean McVay fired him after he led the Rams to the Super Bowl, and he settled in Detroit.

“The reward of the contract and the success that we’ve been able to have, but the journey itself these past three years has been the true success and the true meaning of success, I guess,” he explained. “Obviously, the wins and whatnot and getting the contract are amazing but being able to go through that together with my teammates and with my family, go through the dark times and grow through those times and learn more about yourself and work on yourself — that’s the win in all of this.”

Goff’s $53 million per year contract is an unusually hefty offer, but he is proving himself capable of leading the Lions to another conference title and even a Super Bowl appearance.

“All that’s awesome and great, but if we don’t go and achieve our ultimate goal with all the things that we’ve done to set ourselves up that, it’s not what we want,” he added regarding Detroit’s continuity. “The ultimate success is winning the Super Bowl. Myself, Penei (Sewell), Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow, and all these guys are focused solely on winning the Super Bowl and delivering it to the city.”

Goff and the Lions will hope that their substantial investment pays off.
