Kentucky added an experienced backup quarterback on Tuesday, signing Gavin Wimsatt, a Rutgers transfer and Owensboro native.
“We are excited to add Gavin to our program,” UK head coach Mark Stoops said in a press statement. “Game experience is extremely valuable at quarterback and this is a unique opportunity to add talent and experience to the room.”
Wimsatt, a 6-foot-3 quarterback who played three seasons at Rutgers, including a redshirt year in 2021, will have two years of eligibility to use in Lexington. He signs as a three-star transfer quarterback who is listed as the portal’s 1,234th best player and 99th best quarterback by 247sports.
He chose to enter the transfer portal after Rutgers’ spring camp and head coach Greg Schiano’s decision to announce Minnesota transfer Athan Kaliakmanis as the Scarlet Knights’ starting quarterback in 2024.
Wimsatt will back up Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff in Lexington this fall, joining Beau Allen, who began his college career at Kentucky but then attended Tarleton State (2022) and Georgia Southern (2023) before returning to Lexington, and three-star freshman Cutter Boley in the Wildcats quarterback room.
The dual-threat quarterback will work with the Wildcats’ new offensive coordinator, Bush Hamdan, who stated this spring that Kentucky’s quarterbacks will be required to run as part of the offense.
“I think it is vital. I really do. I feel the quarterback should get at least two first downs a game with his legs,” Hamdan said of the quarterback run game. “I believe it can be a great advantage. “Especially in the college game,” Hamdan told journalists. “You look at what I did at Missouri with Brady Cook, and you know it was one of his redeeming traits in becoming the player he is today.
