Birmingham, Alabama — Cherry Starr, the widow of famed Alabama and Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr, passed away at the age of 89. Cherry Morton Starr died quietly at home in Birmingham, surrounded by family and close friends, according to a news release from Rawhide Youth Services, which she co-founded.
“Her husband, Bart Starr (2019), and her son, Bret (1988), died before her. She is survived by her son, Bart Starr, Jr. (Elaena), grandchildren Shannon (Ryan), Jenny, and Lisa, and six great-grandchildren. “She was a figurative mother to many more,” the announcement stated. Bart Starr met Cherry Louis Morton in high school. Cherry Morton had planned to attend Auburn University but then changed her mind and decided to attend the University of Alabama, where Bart Starr was playing quarterback for famed coach Bear Bryant.
Bart Starr went on to become a great Green Bay Packers quarterback and coach, all while keeping his wife by his side. Bart and Cherry Starr helped establish the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, the Starr Children’s Fund, and Rawhide Youth Services. In May 2019, Bart Starr died in Birmingham.
The funeral arrangements have not been revealed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be donated to the Starr Children’s Fund or Rawhide Youth Services.
