Good News For the Cats

No. 25 Arizona softball wins 2-0 versus New Mexico State.

The No. 25 Arizona softball team swept New Mexico State University, winning both games on Tuesday, April 9 at the NM State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Wildcats (26-12-1) won the first game, 17-8, and the second, 11-3.

 

Game 1: The Aggies started quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning. Arizona replied with a run in the second inning on Kaiah Altmeyer’s single, which scored Blaise Biringer. The following inning was crucial for the Wildcats, who scored five runs. Sophomore Dakota Kennedy and Altmeyer each hit home runs, and Allie Skaggs and Biringer provided RBIs, giving Arizona a 6-3 lead.

Miranda Stoddard earned the victory for Arizona, pitching three innings and allowing five runs on six hits. She is presently 5-7 for the season.

 

Arizona sealed the victory in the fourth inning with two more runs, followed by four more in the fifth inning, capped by Kennedy’s second home run of the game, making the final score 12-4. To close the distance, Arizona scored five more runs in the sixth inning, including a home run by Skaggs and a three-run double by Regan Shockey, to make the final score 17-8 in favor of the Wildcats.

 

Game 2:

Arizona won the second game of the day 11-3, capitalizing on the momentum from the first. New Mexico State came out swinging again in the first inning, scoring two runs to take an early lead. This was quickly followed by a 5-run second inning for the Wildcats, highlighted by a 3-run homer by Kennedy, giving Arizona a 5-2 advantage. In the third, Arizona’s Carlie Scupin and the Aggies’ Jillian Taylor each homered, but the Wildcats lead 6-3.

Arizona’s offense continued to shine, with home runs from Shockey, Altmeyer, and Olivia DiNardo in the following innings. On the defensive side, Tucson native Aissa Silva pitched well, allowing only two earned runs in four innings.

Ultimately, Arizona’s strong offensive effort and outstanding pitching led to an 11-3 victory, leaving New Mexico State winless on the day.

 

Looking ahead:

Continuing on, the Wildcats will meet the University of Oregon at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium in Tucson on Friday, April 12, and Sunday, April 14.
