Although the Green Bay Packers have yet to sign starting quarterback Jordan Love to a contract extension, they have made significant investments in him this offseason. With Yosh Nijman, Jon Runyan Jr., and David Bakhtiari gone, general manager Brian Gutekunst picked three offensive lineman and signed two additional undrafted free agent linemen after the draft.
The first of these offensive linemen was Jordan Morgan, a left tackle from Arizona. Many supporters were disappointed when Green Bay did not select Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean, who was later picked in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gutekunst stated that Morgan has the potential to play four different spots on the offensive line, with the exception of center. Matt LaFleur stated that because Morgan spent his whole college career at left tackle, the Packers will try him out there first.
The Green Bay Packers have a position battle at left tackle.
following Bakhtiari suffered another injury following Week One last season, 2022 seventh-round draft pick Rasheed Walker took over as the Packers’ primary left tackle. While Walker got more consistent as he played, he still experienced a lot of growing pains, which sometimes led to him being benched during games.
While Walker will almost surely improve in 2024, the Packers want to ensure that the best starting five lineman are blocking for Love. This suggests that Walker will not be given the job for the following season. He will have to earn it.
Obviously, Morgan, a first-round pick, figures to be Walker’s main competitor at the position. However, the Packers also added Donovan Jennings from Southern Florida, who may fight for a position there.
Jordan Morgan wants to be the guy blocking for the Green Bay Packers quarterback. Jordan Love.
Morgan, along with all of the other drafted and undrafted rookies, as well as a few guys signed for tryouts, are in Green Bay for rookie minicamp. Morgan recently met with reporters to discuss his comeback from a torn ACL in 2022 and how he sees himself as a player.
He was also asked about Jordan Love, whom Morgan was entranced by when they met in Green Bay. Morgan stated about Love, “I saw when [Love’s breakout] happened, and that’s really special for him.” Everyone loves him here, clearly, and I want to be the one tackle who protects him.”
Morgan appears to be pursuing the starting left tackle position. If he wins, he will be the first rookie to start at left tackle for the Packers since David Bakhtiari in 2013.
Bakhtiari, of course, covered Aaron Rodgers’ blindside for nearly a decade before a knee injury limited him to only 13 games over the last three seasons. If the Packers can get that kind of performance out of Morgan, it can only bode well for the club.
