Keith Wyness, former Everton manager, has suggested that Leicester City could begin the 2024-25 season with zero points.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, insisted the Foxes are “in a position of strength” following promotion despite their poor financial situation.
In March, the Premier League penalized Leicester for allegedly violating the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and the EFL also imposed a transfer embargo.
Enzo Maresca’s team replied by filing a “urgent” legal action against both leagues.
Leicester lost £89.7 million in the 2022-23 season, but teams are only permitted to lose £105 million over a rolling three-year period under PSR.
According to Wyness, Leicester could face a points reduction for the 2024-25 season.
Wyness argued there are still “too many loose ends” to reach a final decision on punishment for the Championship winners.
He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “Leicester has cases ongoing against the Premier League and the EFL.
“I still don’t know when those will arrive.
“As I understand it, they might start next season with a points deduction right away.
“I’m not sure whether they’ll challenge that.
“There are now too many loose ends to make clear pronouncements or provide recommendations on that.
“It’s another messy situation caused by a large grey area in the rules.”
“For Leicester, at least they have been promoted. I’d rather be in that scenario than argue my case in the Championship.
“They are in a position of strength.
“They’ve got the Premier League riches in to help pay these wonderful lawyers we are becoming so well-acquainted with.”
