The Green Bay Packers decided to bring back A.J. Dillon on a one-year contract this offseason.

Green Bay Packers: Surprising Running Back Depth For Training Camp In 2024

The Green Bay Packers’ running back room will look completely different come the 2024 NFL season. This is one of the areas in which Green Bay has improved this offseason. This offseason, the Packers released Aaron Jones after signing Josh Jacobs in free agency.

Jacobs is younger and more talented than Jones is. Aaron Jones was good for Green Bay, but Josh Jacobs earned the rushing crown a few seasons back with 1,653 yards rushing. He spent his first several NFL seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, and he is in a lot better circumstance now with the Green Bay Packers than he was with Las Vegas.

Green Bay may also compete for a Super Bowl victory soon, although the Raiders are not there yet. Josh Jacobs will be the starting running back for Green Bay at the start of training camp, as expected. The question will be who will be the second running back after Jacobs when training camp begins.

According to Freddie Boston of Lombardiavenue.com, rookie Marshawn Lloyd is expected to be the Green Bay Packers’ number two running back in training camp, as head coach Matt LaFleur prefers to use two running backs in his offense. Josh Jacobs is primarily a three-down running back, so keeping him fresh is crucial.

The Green Bay Packers elected to bring back A.J. Dillon on a one-year deal this summer at the running back position. He was the second running back on the depth chart last season behind Aaron Jones. This year, however, Freddie Boston of Lombardiavenue.com believes that rookie Marshawn Lloyd will be the second running back on the depth chart, trailing only A.J. Dillon.

Lloyd was a third-round (88th overall) pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of USC. Some believe that Marshawn Lloyd is the finest running back in this draft class. One of the primary reasons Boston has Lloyd above Dillon as the number two running back entering into this season is that:

“The running back depth chart has changed drastically since last season. Green Bay replaced Aaron Jones with Josh Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd, a third-round pick. The rookie has an excellent chance of capturing the No. 2 job ahead of AJ Dillon if he performs well in pass protection this summer.

The Green Bay Packers’ offense relies heavily on pass protection. Quarterback Jordan Love will need time to pass the football to his targets.

However, Lloyd of the Packers is certain to get a lot of snaps throughout training camp. Marshawn Lloyd has more potential at this time than A.J. Dillon. However, having Dillon as the third running back option is far superior to having Emanuel Wilson or Patrick Taylor Jr.
