The former Sunderland boss will leave West Ham at the end of the 2023–24 season.
West Ham have announced manager David Moyes would depart the club at the end of the season.
The former Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad, and Sunderland manager returned to lead West Ham in the Premier League for the second time in 2019.
The 61-year-old Scot returned to West Ham in December 2019 and led the club to Europa Conference League glory last season, their first major trophy in 43 years.
However, West Ham have won only one of their last ten games in all competitions, losing five of them. Moyes’ side is also expected to lose out on Europe for the fourth consecutive season, with the London club now ranked ninth in the Premier League. West Ham’s last league game was a 5-0 loss against Chelsea.
“I have had four and a half fantastic years at West Ham, and the club is in a better position than when I returned in 2019,” Moyes stated after the news was made.
“When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe,” Moyes said in a statement.
“I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years.”
Lopetegui, the former manager of Spain and Real Madrid, is apparently close to returning to West Ham to succeed Moyes, who left Wolves in August last year.
“David has been an absolute professional to work with and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes – he deserves to be held in the highest esteem for the service he has given to West Ham United, and we wish him every success in the future,” said David Sullivan, owner of West Ham United.
“By making this announcement now, it allows David to get the send-off he deserves from the West Ham supporters and for us all to show our appreciation to him at our final home fixture of the season against Luton Town on Saturday.”
