Hamilton was free to leave Mercedes at the end of 2024 after activating a clause in his contract, and the seven-time champion has chosen to join the Scuderia.
With Ferrari announcing this week that Charles Leclerc has signed a long-term contract extension, Sainz will be without a drive beyond the end of the year.
After Mercedes and Ferrari confirmed Hamilton’s multi-year transfer, Sainz tweeted a short message on his social media channels.
“Following today’s news, Scuderia Ferrari and myself will part ways at the end of 2024,” the Spaniard said.
“We still have a long season ahead of us, and as usual, I will do my absolute best for the squad and Tifosi all around the world.
Ferrari’s statement failed to include a mention of Sainz, who had admitted at the end of last season that he could envisage seeing out his F1 career sporting red.
“I am so happy at Ferrari and so happy to be part of this team that, at the moment, I do not see an expiration date,” he told DAZN.
“I have, I hope, many years ahead of me and counting all of them in red would not matter to me.
“My main motivation is to be World Champion. And if I can achieve that with Ferrari, even better. It is what we have to try in 2024 and I think what capacity we have.”
Where Sainz’s future rests will be the subject of much speculation until the 29-year-old declares his plans at a later date, with numerous spots available in 2025.
Sainz’s stock remains high in the F1 paddock, as he was the first non-Red Bull driver to win a grand prix in 2023, triumphing from pole position in Singapore.
A switch from Hamilton to Mercedes is not out of the question, nor is a move to Sauber, which is presently known as Stake before transitioning into an Audi works team in 2026.
The Sainz family has a close relationship with Audi, with Sainz Senior winning his fourth Dakar Rally with the German marque just last month.
According to Thursday’s announcement, Sainz Jr’s tenure with Ferrari will finish next year, with his time in scarlet red commencing in 2021 after switching from McLaren.
In his initial season, the Spaniard outperformed teammate Charles Leclerc in the standings, before winning his first race at Silverstone in his second Ferrari campaign.
Despite his recent triumph for Ferrari, Sainz will not extend his stay with the Maranello club, instead relying on a star-studded lineup of Leclerc and Hamilton.
