Carlos Sainz intimated that he may have a new Formula One drive lined up after word leaked that he was departing Ferrari to make space for Lewis Hamilton.

Rumours originally arose on Thursday that Hamilton may join Ferrari and partner Charles Leclerc in 2025, after the Monegasque just inked a new contract.

Sainz was in negotiations with Ferrari, but chairman John Elkann, a long-time Hamilton fan, swooped for the seven-time World Champion, ending Sainz’s four-year stint at the Scuderia.

Sainz’s future has been called into question, with the two-time race winner being tipped as a potential Audi driver whenever the company enters and takes over the Stake operation in 2026 – and the Spaniard has suggested that a future seat may already be in the works.

“Following today’s news, Scuderia Ferrari and myself will part ways at the end of 2024,” Sainz said in a social media statement.

“We still have a long season ahead of us, and as usual, I will do my absolute best for the squad and Tifosi all around the world.

“News about my future will be announced in due course.”
