Liam Lawson, AlphaTauri’s super-sub, has revealed his expected 2024 alternatives after missing out on a permanent berth on the Formula One grid.

The New Zealander was called into action at Zandvoort after Daniel Ricciardo fractured his hand in a practice crash, and he went on to compete in five Grands Prix for AlphaTauri instead of the Australian. Plaudits rapidly poured in for the 21-year-old for his exploits, particularly his ninth-place points finish in Singapore, and AlphaTauri appeared to be at a loss as to who they would choose as their driver combination for next year.

Lawson was ultimately passed over for a permanent place, with the team opting for Yuki Tsunoda and Ricciardo, but his five-race stint will only help his chances in the future.

Away from F1, Lawson completed his Japanese Super Formula season at the end of October, finishing second to Ritoma Miyata, but gaining significant experience along the way.

On the Beyond The Grid podcast, Lawson discussed the possibilities available to him in 2024, with a strong emphasis on his status as a reserve for Red Bull and AlphaTauri.

“Because I’ve raced in most championships and I’ve even been in F1, I can’t really go and do F2 again,” remarked the Spaniard. “There would be no point. I can’t do Super Formula again. I could, but there is less advantage to doing so. So I believe it is entirely focused on being reserved.

“That implies a lot of simulator time, which I believe is what helped me get into Formula One and adjust to it quickly. I’ve been a reserve for about two years now, so I’ve done a lot of simulator work.
