NEW YORK (AP)— The NBA penalized the Philadelphia 76ers $100,000 on Friday for breaking injury reporting regulations by first declaring Joel Embiid as out for a game in which he later played.
Embiid returned to the 76ers’ lineup Tuesday night after a 29-game layoff due to left knee surgery, leading them to a 109-105 victory over the Thunder. That occurred after the 76ers listed him as out on the original injury report. By late afternoon, his status had been upgraded to doubtful.
Teams must list the status of any players whose participation may be hampered by injury by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game, unless they are playing a back-to-back. The injury report is then updated during the course of the day.
The league stated that it considered the 76ers’ history of fines for breaking injury reporting standards. The Sixers were fined $75,000 on Feb. 1 for failing to appropriately include Embiid on their report in a timely manner for their game against Denver on Jan. 27, just before he suffered a torn meniscus that necessitated surgery.
