Newcastle United are considering signing former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea after losing Nick Pope to a long-term injury.
Nick Pope tumbled awkwardly during Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday, dislocating his shoulder in the process. While the results of a diagnostic on his injuries are expected, writer Mike McGrath believes the goalkeeper will be out of action for up to five months.
With Pope potentially out for the rest of the season, the Magpies are mulling a deal for former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, according to the Daily Mail.
The Spaniard has been without a club since he left the Red Devils in the summer after his contract expired. He was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr reportedly showing interest in him. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami too were rumoured to be interest but neither move materialised.
Amid a possibility of returning to the Premier League, De Gea also has an offer from Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
Pope has managed to keep the most number of clean sheets in the current Premier League season, six, one more than Manchester United’s Andre Onana.
The injury comes as a huge blow for both the club and the player as it will also hurt his chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad.
