It wasn’t a bad pass; yet, a better pass was required in those situation. It didn’t help that Ewers had a defensive lineman nearby, whose presence most certainly influenced the throw.
Texas was only in this position because Washington running back Dillon Johnson suffered an injury with less than a minute remaining, preventing the Huskies from running out the time before kicking.
Texas supporters will be saying “If” and “But” and “The refs screwed us” about this game for months, but Washington was the better team and deserved to win. Texas’ season is gone, and it’s decision time.
“I’m a human being, and I understand what’s ahead,” Ewers stated at the post-Sugar Bowl press conference. “But, at the same time, it’s a long distance between here and a year from now. A lot may happen in 365 days. But I know we’ll work as hard as we can to make it back. And that’s all we can really do: attack the summer the correct way and just keep building this squad to what it’s capable of.
That sounds like a man planning to return to Austin.
Arch Manning signed at Texas solely to play and start. Serving as a backup in Austin for a year was always part of the plan.
He’s done it while serving as the No. 3 quarterback behind Ewers and Maalik Murphy; Murphy performed admirably this season while Ewers was out with an injury.
Murphy has announced his transfer to Duke, which has no impact on the Texas quarterback position.
Texas will shortly join the SEC; their second game of the 2024 season will be against Michigan in Ann Arbor. The schedule also includes Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M.
In most cases, Texas would be alright going against that schedule with Quinn Ewers as its starting quarterback. He played well enough to help Texas make the playoffs and nearly win the game.
This is not true in most circumstances. Quarterback royalty is the current QB2, and Arch Manning will want to play.
Quinn Ewers had a script. So does Arch Manning.
Sarkisian will oversee the rewrite, and it’s difficult to imagine Manning being anything other than the starting quarterback.
