“[Chop] Robinson has nearly every quality the 49ers seek for as an edge pass rusher, despite the dismal results. Although Robinson’s 32.5-inch arms are only in the 12th percentile for edge rushers, he lacks the ideal arm length, but he does have the one quality that the 49ers most desire in a player for the position, which could make it difficult for them to pass on him.
Robinson can convert his burst off the snap into power to push blockers back towards the quarterback. His 10-yard split of 1.54 seconds at the Combine demonstrated his exceptional get-off.
“After the first few waves of free agency, here’s a quick rundown of each position and whether the 49ers are better, worse, or neutral at that spot:”
To begin with, Dobbs is a terrific all-around athlete. Whether it’s rushing the ball to pick up a first down or keeping a play alive, he has a knack with his legs that Darnold doesn’t. Throughout his career, Dobbs has averaged 5.5 yards per carry. In comparison, Justin Fields has a career average of 6.2 yards per carry. Purdy averages 2.6 yards per attempt over his career. 3.6 is Darnold’s career average.
But Dobbs is more than just a quarterback with a quick release. He continues to scan for opportunities in the passing game as he scrambles but has the ability to flee if necessary. Darnold is also capable of that. Unlike Dobbs, though.
Dobbs faced the 49ers during his time with the Arizona Cardinals last season. He was also rather elusive, running for 48 yards on 12 carries in addition to passing for 265 yards and two scores. He demonstrated that he is more than just a rushing quarterback against the 49ers with a QB rating of 102.2.
The 49ers were clearly superior against Dobbs’ Cardinals, but the quarterback managed to keep his side in the game. Towards the end of the third quarter, he brought Arizona within five points before Purdy and company sealed the victory.
