Worst Nightmare; Manly Sea Eagles lost yet another legend some minutes ago

The Manly Sea Eagles have paid respect to English-born grand final-winning forward Phil Lowe, who died at the age of 74.

Lowe played an important role in Manly’s dramatic 1976 grand final victory over the Parramatta Eels, scoring the only try for his club in a thrilling 13-10 victory at the SCG.

His performance in that game cemented his place in Sea Eagles history, since he was a vital participant in one of the club’s most cherished victories.

Aside from his stint with Manly, Phil enjoyed a successful career with Hull KR and the Great Britain national squad. He appeared in almost 400 Hull KR games and scored 179 tries.

Being a member of the last Lions team to win the World Cup in 1972 was a career highlight for him, cementing his reputation as one of rugby league’s greatest forwards.

Phil’s effect on the field was equaled by his influence off it.

He was a hero to many, including KR owner Neil Hudgell, who regarded him not only as a fantastic player but also as a dear friend and a genuine, kind-hearted person.

“Phil was an incredible man. A one-off. He achieved everything in the sport, including Grand Final victories on both sides of the globe.

‘He received numerous awards for service to his country.

Phil accomplished it with modesty and humility. He was my inspiration growing up around the sport in the 1970s.

Anyone who saw Phil Lowe in full flight will never forget it. He became a very good friend of mine during the last 20 years, and we had many wonderful memories.

‘He was usually direct and to the point, yet he had a very good heart. He was respected everywhere. I will never forget our last vacation down under. He met Rob Crossland and myself at Manly’s waterfront and took us to his local, the Steyne Hotel.

‘He was still revered there, 40 years after putting up his boots. Phil will be deeply missed by his many friends. Hull KR, a true red and white club, has lost an icon and a piece of its history.
