The Detroit Tigers have already signed starting pitchers Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda this offseason, and now they have good news ab

When the Tigers launched their latest rebuild, they chose to focus on young starting pitchers. They picked Mize, Matt Manning, and Tarik Skubal, but none of them have been able to remain healthy for long in the major leagues.

The Tigers’ goal for 2024 is to compete with Maeda, Flaherty, and preferably those three, but if someone goes down again, they’ll have the internal depth to withstand the loss.

 

Mize was selected first overall from Auburn in the 2018 draft and made his professional debut in 2020. He’s 7-13 in his young career with a 4.29 ERA, but he showed great promise in 2021, pitching to a 3.71 ERA in 30 starts.

The Tigers finished second in the American League Central in 2023 and are aiming for their first playoff appearance since 2014.

Given how mediocre the American League Central is right now, it’s not impossible for Detroit to contend immediately in 2024.
