Just In: The Michigan Wolverines hired an executive.

The seasoned coach will be joining the national winners.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is nearing a contract to become the new defensive coordinator for the national champion Michigan Wolverines.

Martindale, a 20-year NFL coaching veteran, was a candidate for the defensive coordinator roles with the Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars after leaving the Giants.

He will, however, move to the Big Ten conference and join new head coach Sherrone Moore’s staff to take over the Wolverines’ defense.

Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines’ previous head coach, was recently hired by the Los Angeles Chargers after the team won the national championship. Members of Harbaugh’s Michigan staff, notably defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, followed him to Los Angeles.

Before joining the Giants, Martindale was the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, working under head coach John Harbaugh. He served as the Ravens’ linebackers coach from 2012 until 2017.

Martindale previously spent time with the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders before joining the Ravens.

Martindale has not coached at the college level since 2000-2003, when he served as Western Kentucky’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Earlier this week, the Giants appointed Shane Bowen as their new defensive coordinator, completing Daboll’s coaching staff hires for 2024.
