The Green Bay Packers will prepare for free agency next month, and one of the players who could be available is running back AJ Dillon. Dillon is 25 years old and missed the last few games of the season due to an injury.
ESPN staff writer Rob Demovsky wrote regarding AJ Dillon’s future with the franchise, saying:
“No one has immersed themselves in the community more than Dillon, who married a Green Bay resident and has been dubbed the unofficial “Mayor of Door County” due to the amount of time he spends and promotes the Wisconsin summer vacation destination. While Jones was injured this season, Dillon had numerous opportunities to establish he is a No. 1 running back, but he performed more like a No. 2. He could be a low-cost option for re-signing, with the source placing his annual pay at the low end of the market, between $1.5 million to $3 million. Dillon missed the final three games, including the playoffs, due to a severe stinger.
In his previous season with the Packers, A.J. Dillon rushed for 613 yards on 178 carries and two touchdowns, averaging 3.4 yards per carry. He also caught 22 passes for 223 yards and zero touchdowns, averaging 10.1 yards per reception. The Green Bay Packers will likely replace Dillon at running back in the 2024 NFL Draft.
General manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur are likely to use the 2024 NFL Draft to improve the team’s running back situation. They will have 11 selections and will most likely utilize at least one or two of them on a running back. AJ Dillon didn’t establish himself as a top running back.
He is more of a secondary running back. Green Bay does not want to give him the money he expects. The Packers are better off picking younger running backs with more potential. Dillon doesn’t have much more upside. Aaron Jones will turn 30 in the middle of the 2024 NFL regular season, and he will be in the final year of his deal.
This is about the Packers’ future. Dillon does not fit within the Green Bay Packers’ future plans.
