The Dallas Stars went home to play the Edmonton Oilers in a Saturday matinee on ABC. The Stars lost 4-3 to the Oilers in overtime at the American Airlines Center. Dallas dropped to 34-14-7, while Edmonton improved to 32-18-1.
Calvin Pickard, the Oilers’ backup goalkeeper, made 24 saves and won.
Stars supporters who arrived early were given special Wyatt Johnston Youth jerseys on Kids Day. In addition, Stars fans visited the Fan Center to purchase a Stars Alumni mystery puck and meet former Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who played in Dallas between 2009 and 2018.
The Stars’ opening lineup of Ryan Suter, Tyler Seguin, Mason Marchment, Matt Duchene, Joel Hanley, and Jake Oettinger. Oettinger made 20 stops in a losing effort.
The opening period had two high-sticking penalties, one for each team. Roope Hintz was called for high-sticking against Oilers captain Connor McDavid at 9:00, while Brett Kulak was called for high-sticking against Stars alternate captain Joe Pavelski at 19:22.
Both teams agreed to a scoreless stalemate at the end of the first quarter. In addition, 1:22 of the Stars’ 4-on-5 power play continued over into the second period. Edmonton led Dallas in shots, 7-6, after 20 minutes.
The Stars finally scored in the second period. At 1:08, Mason Marchment blasted a slap shot into the Oilers’ net for a power-play goal and 1-0 lead. Marchment’s 18th goal of the season came with helpers from Wyatt Johnston and Matt Duchene.
The Stars’ lead was short-lived, as the Oilers immediately tied the game at one-all. At 2:03, Evan Bouchard blasted a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to tie the game at 1-1. Mattias Ekholm and Corey Perry assisted on Bouchard’s 13th of the season.
The Stars quickly recovered the lead. At 4:47, Thomas Harley sent a wrist shot into the Oilers’ net, making the score 2-1. Matt Duchene and Miro Heiskanen each assisted on Harley’s 14th goal of the season.
The Oilers tied the game again. At 6:55, Corey Perry tipped in a shot, tying the score 2-2. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl assisted on Perry’s sixth goal of the season.
The Oilers reclaimed their advantage. At 18:42, Derek Ryan scored on a shorthanded slap shot for a 3-2 lead. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had the lone assist on Ryan’s sixth of the season.
The Stars knotted the game at the end of regulation. At 19:02, Matt Duchene scored a backhand goal on the power play to level the game 3-3. Mason Marchment and Thomas Harley assisted on Duchene’s 22nd goal of the season.
The score was deadlocked 3-3 after two periods. Dallas outshot Edmonton 22-17 after 40 minutes.
There were no scoring plays or penalties during the third period. The game remained tied 3-3 at the end of regular, forcing overtime. Dallas led Edmonton 27-23 after 60 minutes.
Evan Bouchard scored a power-play goal and the game-winning goal for the Oilers just 30 seconds into overtime, giving them a 4-3 victory over the Stars. Leon Draisaitl provided the lone assist on Bouchard’s 14th of the season and second of the day. Dallas led Edmonton 27-24 after around 61 minutes.
