Matthew Stafford’s unhappiness for the city of Detroit may irritate some Lions supporters.
Matthew Stafford appeared on his wife Kelly Stafford’s podcast this week to discuss his experience in the NFL thus far, and one of the notable statements was how impressed he is with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and former Rams quarterback Jared Goff’s performance. However, during the Lions show “Ermanni and Edwards,” it appears that the most significant takeaway from watching the footage was how furious some Detroit fans are about Stafford’s departure and previous statements.
After the Lions defeated the Rams in the wild card round, Stafford was asked if he was pleased that Detroit had finally won a playoff game after 30 years of failure. Stafford’s response of “I’m happy for the players” has upset some Lions supporters.
During Ermanni and Edwards, one of the producers (?) stated that he cannot forgive Stafford for saying he was delighted for the players but not the fans. “He never understood the Detroit fanbase,” says one guy. Braylon Edwards didn’t necessarily disagree.
Stafford spent his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, going 0-3 in the playoffs before being dealt to the Rams for two first-round picks, a third, and Goff in 2021. Stafford was able to win a playoff game—and a Super Bowl—in his first season with the Rams, shortly after leaving Detroit.
It appears that neither side is necessarily glad for the other.
