Sunderland defender discloses season-ending injury and releases post-surgery photos.

The Sunderland defender has admitted that his season is gone due to an injury.

Ben Crompton, a Sunderland defender, has announced that his season is over due to an injury sustained while playing for the under-21s.

Crompton played for Sunderland in pre-season under Tony Mowbray against South Shields before making his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup earlier this season after signing in July 2022.

Michael Beale selected the former Shrewsbury and Wolves player on the bench against Stoke City earlier this season in the Championship, but he did not play as the Black Cats won 3-1 at the Stadium of Light.

However, the 20-year-old started in the Premier League 2 for the under-21s at the end of January but was replaced by Graeme Murty after only 20 minutes as Sunderland faced Leeds United in Yorkshire. Crompton was replaced by Zak Johnson, a returning Hartlepool United loanee who has since joined Dundalk on a temporary basis.

Crompton has now confirmed that his season is finished and published photos of himself recovering after surgery, vowing to return better the following season.

Crompton wrote on social media, “Unfortunately, my season has ended earlier than intended, which is difficult to accept right now. It’s been a roller coaster of highs and lows, but thanks to a successful operation, I can finally begin my therapy and recuperation. “I’ll be back stronger.”

Sunderland’s first team will face Swansea City at the Stadium of Light in the Championship on Saturday, with Mike Dodds taking over after Michael Beale was sacked.
