The Maple Leafs assign Joseph Woll to the Marlies for a conditioning stint.
Joseph Woll is ready to take the next step in his return to the net, joining the Marlies for a conditioning stay.
The Marlies have two games against Laval this weekend, and considering that they are back-to-back, Joseph Woll will most certainly start one of them. The Marlies’ next game would be on Wednesday, if they wanted to give Woll more than one.
Depending on how things go, Woll’s return to the Leafs may be as soon as Tuesday’s game against the Golden Knights, but the Leafs can keep him down with the Marlies for a few weeks if they choose.
Presumably, the Leafs want to get a sense of Woll at the NHL level before the trade deadline.
Unfortunately for anyone in Toronto who wants to check out Woll, the Marlies are on the road until March 1st.
Woll hasn’t played since December 7th, thus getting him into games is essential.
Stars send top prospect back to AHL hours after calling him up
Logan Stankoven, Dallas Stars’ top prospect, will have to wait till another day to make his NHL debut.
Stankoven was called up to the NHL from the Texas Stars on Tuesday morning, only to be sent back a few hours later in a confusing move.
With forward Evgenii Dadonov on long-term injured reserve last week and center Matt Duchene missing Monday’s game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden, Stankoven was slated to make his NHL debut Tuesday night against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Duchene did, however, skate with the team on Tuesday morning and appeared in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the Rangers. While the Stars are certain Stankoven is NHL ready, it is unclear when he will be recalled again.
“He’s done everything you need to do to earn an opportunity,” Stars head coach Peter DeBoer told reporters Tuesday, according to NHL.com. “He had a good training camp, moved to the American League, and currently leads the league in scoring. I believe we can all recognize the type of player he is and his skills. If he gets into the lineup, we’ll attempt to place him in a position where he can use those skills to benefit us.”
Stankoven, the Stars’ second-round choice in 2021, leads the American Hockey League in scoring in his debut season, with 24 goals and 57 points in 46 games.
The 20-year-old forward scored 79 goals and 201 points in 107 games over his last two junior league seasons in the Western Hockey League. He also helped Canada capture the gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, scoring three goals and eleven points in seven games.
