Tua Tagovailoa has stated that he is committed to the Miami Dolphins for the foreseeable future. The Miami Dolphins signal-caller told the reporters on Friday that he hopes to negotiate a new agreement this summer as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
The 25-year-old quarterback, who appeared in his first Pro Bowl yesterday, is coming off a stellar season with the Miami Dolphins. As a result, the front office has intimated that Tua Tagovailoa’s wish could come true.
“There’s been communication,” Tagovailoa stated. “I think the thing with that right now is that I’m just letting the team talk to my agent and letting them work that out.”
Tua Tagovailoa’s 2023 Campaign
Tua Tagovailoa had a productive 2023 season, leading the NFL in passing yards (4,624) and scoring 29 touchdown passes in 17 regular-season games. It is impressive that he played all regular-season games, considering this is the first time in his four-year NFL career.
Because of this, the Miami Dolphins had the greatest overall offense in the league. They finished second in the AFC East with an 11-6 win-loss record, but were defeated in the wild-card round by the Kansas City Chiefs in a blowout, casting doubt on Tua Tagovailoa’s ability to perform in critical games.
The reason for suspicion is that the Miami Dolphins went 1-6 against playoff-caliber opponents in 2023. Tua Tagovailoa has a 62.8 completion % against top teams, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and an 80.2 passer rating. Against non-playoff teams, Tua Tagovailoa had a 71.7 completion percentage, 22 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 110.7 passer rating.
What the Miami Dolphins have said about Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins face significant considerations this summer, as they are over $51 million over the salary cap. Aside from Tua Tagovailoa, notable free agents include Christian Wilkins, Robert Hunt, Xavien Howard, Terron Armstead, and Jerome Baker.
However, Miami Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier stated that the organization is working on finishing Tua Tagovailoa’s deal since they want to keep him in the long run.
“The idea is to keep him here long-term and performing at a high level. That has always been the plan, and we will continue to contact with him during the summer,” Grier said.
