Sunderland’s Championship rivals have named a new manager.

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that former Birmingham manager John Eustace has taken over at Ewood Park.

Tensions have been high among Sunderland’s Championship opponents, with former manager Jon Dahl Tomasson alleged to have grown more upset with failed trade deals and budgetary constraints prior to his resignation on Friday.

The Dane, who was appointed in 2022, reportedly submitted his resignation earlier this week, with the squad on an eight-match losing streak in the Championship. Tommasson’s departure has been announced by Blackburn Rovers, who have also confirmed Eustace’s appointment.
“I am excited for this new challenge in my career and can’t wait to get started,” he told the Rovers website upon his appointment. “I am looking forward to visiting Ewood Park tomorrow and meeting the fans, who may play an important role for us between now and the end of the season.

“I will give my all to ensure the fans have a team they can be proud of and, together, I hope we can quickly start climbing the table.”

The 44-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club, having previously played well for Birmingham City. Eustace will be joined at Ewood Park by his trusted assistant, Matt Gardiner, whom he previously worked with at St. Andrews.

Rovers prepare for their home game against Stoke on Saturday, followed by a trip to Birmingham on Tuesday. Eustace has been out of job since the Blues fired him in October, and Wayne Rooney replaced him at St Andrew’s.
