Steelers Friday mailbag: Will Pittsburgh make a significant play for a quarterback?
Welcome to the Steelers Friday mailbag, where we answer your questions weekly. Thank you to the BTSC community for your ongoing support. It’s time to open the envelopes.
Note: Because the Steelers are now in the offseason, we’ll be doing mailbags bi-weekly to ensure that we have a full cycle of news to cover.
Q: Jarrett, did the entire Steelers coaching staff attend the Senior Bowl practices, or just Tomlin and a few others?– Mike Humphreys
A: No, only Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan, along with at least one scout who was present during the week. No team sends their full crew; that is just too much. Usually, just the head coach and general manager go down, followed by the scouts who have been assigned to be there.
Q: Will the Steelers do anything to save money on Cam Heyward’s deal, or may he simply retire?- BonAirJim
A: Cam isn’t retiring; he’ll be back. I’d anticipate the Steelers to convert some of his pay into a roster bonus to save money on the cap, but he’s not leaving.
Q: Does Art Rooney II genuinely understand how desperate the quarterback situation is, or is he simply out of touch?– p-squared
A: I would incline towards the latter. Rooney is cheap and overly patient. He doesn’t seem to comprehend that it’s no longer possible to be a contender with a mediocre quarterback as long as your defense is strong. It is the quarterback’s age. If you don’t have a strong one, or even an above-average one, and everything else on the roster is as close to perfect as possible, you have no chance. I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a major splash. Prepare to face Ryan Tannehill and a mid-round draft pick as the “competition” at quarterback.
