Green Bay Packers best candidate to succeed Mark Murphy as CEO and president in 2025

For the second time, the Green Bay Packers accomplished their quarterback succession plan flawlessly, transitioning from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and then Rodgers to Jordan Love. Green Bay appears to be staying the same at what is perhaps the organization’s most crucial position.

Mark Murphy has been the Pacers’ president and CEO since 2007. Before moving to Green Bay, the New York native and former Super Bowl champion with the Washington Commanders worked as athletic director at Colgate (1992-2003) and Northwestern (2003-2007).

With Murphy at the helm, the Packers established themselves as one of the NFL’s modern dynasties, winning Super Bowl XLV and making annual playoff appearances. As the brand begins a new era with Love as its face, Green Bay is planning behind the scenes to replace Murphy.

Murphy must retire from his post at reaching the age of 70, according to the team’s bylaws. With Murphy turning 69 in July, it appears like Green Bay may already know who will succeed him at the top of the organization’s hierarchy.

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, it is a ‘widely held notion’ in Green Bay that Ed Policy will succeed Murphy as Packers CEO and team president in 2025.

Policy is a 53-year-old Midwest native. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame and Stanford University, he served as the Arena Football League’s deputy commissioner and president from 2001 to 2008. Following that, he served as the AFL’s acting commissioner from 2008 to 2009.

He later joined the National Football League as an executive consultant in 2009. He was only in that capacity for two seasons before joining Green Bay as vice president and general counsel in 2021. After holding that post till 2018, Policy was elevated to chief operations officer.

Promoting Policy to the CEO would help preserve the Packers’ hierarchy well-structured and ensure continuity. Policy is likely to report to Murphy in 2025, just as general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur have in the past, as Green Bay maintains continuity and familiarity in the front office.
